Ad-hoc Library, A Manual

Ordinarily, we believe that knowledge is very near to us, sometimes we think knowledge is attainable and stable. Or we walk near it but don’t realise its movement and reflection. It is a kind of movement and a journey. It is personal but collective. It is boundless. It is emotional. In some cases it is a total, unstoppable experience. It exists and moves trans-locally. It is a representation. It is not presentable. Makes you feel alone as a singularity. Makes you feel near to something. Makes you feel like the Other. It is filled with space and love. You feel you are near even if it is always far away.

The mobile archive presents our trans-local production of knowledge. Realities, objects, ideas, fly in the air that you can catch and reproduce. The Ad-hoc library intends to be part of the swarm intelligence of the city: it moves, expanding knowledge wherever it is taken, but never alone. Always with people.

Instructions:

1- Work together with more people: the designer of the device, the content curators, the authors, the readers.
2- Select the kind of contents, books, fanzines you want to share.
3- Select a topic, share it, discuss it, listen what people want to read.
4- Think on which places, which public spaces to take it.
5- Ask citizens to participate, to take out the chairs and start reading.
6- From time to time, make a book-club, a speaker’s corner, an activity helpful to spread knowledge.
7- Simply enjoy.

The events and exhibitions will introduce architecture as a discipline that is not exclusive to professionals or defined only by buildings, but rather as an expanding field with which, amongst others, sociologists, scientists, curators and artists are all dynamically and radically engaging.”

[SP]

by Architecture for Humanity Design Fellow David Pound with Joe Addo

As part of the 20 Centers for 2010 Campaign, Architecture for Humanity partnered with the FIFA World Cup Organization and Play Soccer Ghana to design and build the Football for Hop Center. The program included spaces for public health, education and football while addressing local social challenges in disadvantaged areas as well as improving education and health services for young people. The Football for Hope Centre in Khayelitsha is the first of the 20 Football for Hope Centres in Africa.

The design incorporates passive solar principles and mixed building material palette of indigenous, renewable and reclaimed components. Because of the efficiency of the design, there is no need for cooling systems and minimized running costs for electric and water. The building also uses reclaimed scaffolding and donated shipping containers for the structural elements with natural and local materials such as bamboo and mud blocks.

The Dalston Eastern Curve Garden was developed on the old Eastern Curve railway line which once linked Dalston Junction Station to the goods yard and the North London Line. The Garden was designed by the architectural collective Exyzt who also built last summer’s temporary Dalston Mill on the site. This year they returned to construct the spacious wooden garden pavilion which hosts events, workshops and gatherings.

The Garden includes large raised beds for growing food, which fill up fast with tomatoes, peppers and scented herbs, all grown by local residents. Wildlife-friendly trees and shrubs, including hazel, hawthorn and birch have been planted alongside butterfly bushes, bracken and other plants that were already growing on the derelict site.

When designing a building or a city, architects should notice about the relationship it has with the natural environment and how they interact, looking for the reconciliation between techniques and nature. What if this fascination about extreme environments were helpful to reach a deeper understanding of our relationship with nature?. Then we could paraphrase Lebbeus Woods: “Each architect must find their own, natural way.”

Deshechos de metal, plástico, vidrio, cartón, que en la mayoría de casos acaban en vertederos incontrolados convertidos en ciudades infames donde viven y trabajan una legión de desheredados.
